Payara Platform

Supported Platforms

Though it is always possible for new versions to be supported, this page details the JVMs currently supported by the Payara Platform (both Payara Server and Payara Micro).

While not all environments are tested, if it is on a supported JVM we will provide support for customers and address issues reported by the community. Similarly, other platforms can always be requested for support.

Supported Java Virtual Machines

The Payara Platform currently supports the following Java Virtual Machines:

  • Azul Zulu JDK (Azul Platform Core): 11 (11.0.12+), 17 (17.34/17.0.3+), 21 (21.30/21.0.1+)

  • Azul Zing JDK (Azul Platform Prime): 11 (11.0.12+), 17 (17.34/17.0.3+), 21 (21.30/21.0.1+)

  • Oracle JDK: 8 (u162+), 11 (11.0.5+), 17 (17.0.3+), 21 (21.0.1+)

  • Amazon Corretto: 8, 11 (11.0.5+), 17 (17.0.3+), 21 (21.0.1+)

  • Adopt Open JDK: 8, 11 (11.0.5+), 17 (17.0.3+), 21 (21.0.1+)

  • Adopt Open JDK with Eclipse Open J9: 8, 11 (11.0.5+), 17 (17.0.3+), 21 (21.0.1+)

  • RedHat JDK: 8 (u162+), 11 (11.0.5+), 17 (17.0.3+), 21 (21.0.1+)

The Payara Platform currently supports the x64 and arm64 variants of the above JVMs. Payara Enterprise customers can request support for other CPU architecture variants.

TLS 1.3 is supported on JDK 8 with Azul Platform Core 1.8.222+, Open JDK 8u262+ based builds and any future LTS releases of the JDK (11, 17, and so on).

A separate Payara Server Blue distribution is no longer required for IBM Java SDK.

Supported Operating Systems

The Payara Platform currently supports the following Operating Systems in all the versions listed below and all their newer versions:

  • Windows

    • Windows 7+ (only in development)

    • Windows Server 2008+

  • Linux

    • Ubuntu 14.04 (Trusty Tahr) LTS+

    • SUSE 11, 12, 15, 16 (See Note 1)

    • RHEL 5+

    • Amazon Linux (all versions)

    • Debian 7 (Wheezy)+

  • Other

    • MacOS(OSX) 10.10.5 (Yosemite)+ (only in development)

    • IBM AIX 7.1+

In general, Payara Server runs on any system supported by at least one of the supported JVMs.

Note (1): Payara will support Enterprise products when deployed in RHEL-compatible environments that are supported by SUSE through its Multi-Linux Support (MLS) offering

Third Party Collaborations

Payara Platform Enterprise integrates with various other services that complement your Java deployment experience on the platform.

Azul Platform

Payara’s partnership with Azul brings Azul Platform Core and Azul Platform Prime to your application deployment.

Azul Platform Core

Azul Platform Core is designed for enterprise, distribution (ISV), and embedded (OEM) use cases. It provides certified OpenJDK builds, Azul Zulu Builds of OpenJDK (Azul Zulu), with tight security and the cost efficiencies you need to run today’s business–critical, Java-based services. These builds are free to use and a drop-in replacement for any other OpenJDK distribution.

Key advantages include:

  • High Trust: Chosen by leading global brands, Azul Platform Core offers engineering support and 100% open-source builds that are Java SE compliant and TCK verified.

  • High Value: Azul Platform Core is a one-to-one replacement for Oracle Java SE with the most architectures, package types, and configurations options compared to other OpenJDK providers.

  • High Security: Azul Platform Core delivers quarterly stabilized security updates for rapid deployment into production, backed by an industry-leading support SLA.

Azul Platform Prime

Azul Platform Prime is a high-performance Java platform that delivers up to 37% faster performance compared to other OpenJDK distributions. At its core is Azul Zing, an enhanced build of OpenJDK that serves as the actual JDK running your applications. The platform requires no code changes or recompilation, making integration straightforward for existing Java applications.

Key advantages include:

  • Performance Improvements: Azul Zing, the enhanced JDK that runs your applications, achieves improved responsiveness and consistency while maintaining performance SLAs, even as loads increase. It provides superior application performance, responsiveness, and efficiency compared to standard OpenJDK distributions.

  • Cost Reduction: Organizations can reduce cloud compute costs by 20% or more through Azul Zing’s more efficient CPU utilization and faster Java code execution, requiring fewer compute resources for the same workload.

  • Advanced Garbage Collection: Azul Zing includes the C4 Pauseless Garbage Collector, which ensures consistent performance under heavy loads and enables 2-5X more transaction processing without pauses, eliminating the "stop-the-world" pauses that limit scalability in traditional JVMs.

  • Rapid Application Startup: Azul Zing’s ReadyNow technology speeds up application startup and time to peak performance by reusing profiling data, solving traditional Java warm-up issues and allowing applications to start fast and stay fast.

  • Optimizer Hub: This optional Azul Platform Prime component provides centralized JIT compilation and intelligent curation of optimization profiles, enabling fleet-wide collaboration where multiple Azul Zing JVMs share optimizations and learnings for improved cloud scale, elasticity, and cost efficiencies.

Azul Platform Prime requires opt-in during contract negotiations with sales. Sales will acquire a subscription based on vCPU cores, with annual billing directly from Azul. Customers receive an installation wizard with the JVM enabled. For post-installation enablement, contact sales - the service team will provide two commands to activate it on your existing installation.
